Negative taken of group portrait of the Father Haines with a group of children probably at Easter outside of Saint Gabriel's Catholic Church located at 323 E. Grand Avenue in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas. Arriving in Arkansas in 1908, the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity Refuge bought the Williamson Place on Malvern Avenue in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas to use as a monastery and converted the barn into to Saint Michael's Catholic School the next year. The Sisters opened Saint Augustine School, a Catholic school for African American children, in 1916. St. Augustine was renamed St. Gabriel School when the Rev. Father John M. Haines took over in 1941. From 1916 to 1944, the sisters also maintained St. Gabriel's, until the Sisters of the Sacred Heart from Chicago took over the school. Father Haines served as pastor until his death on June 27, 1947. St. Gabriel's Church was listed in the phone book until 1972 and St. Gabriel's School was listed until 1974.
